For the past week, Tony and I have traveled through Chile’s Atacama Desert and the Bolivian Salt Flats. We had an incredible journey, although we were completely out of touch with the digital world out in the dessert – Duh! Luckily, upon returning to the 21st century, I was able to catch up on some great travel articles from the week.
Here is my weekly roundup of favorites:
- When summing up my RTW adventure, I couldn’t have said it better than Caroline from 9-5 – “you have to endure the rain to appreciate the rainbow.” On the road, things aren’t always magical. You sometimes have to stay holed up in the hostel all day doing work, you may have to take a miserable overnight bus to get from one destination to the next, you may get horribly lost trying to navigate around a foreign city… but when things are magical, you realize that all the not-so-great moments are totally worth it.
- Attention fellow foodies: Eldhús, “Iceland’s Little House of Food” (a house on wheels staffed by volunteers alongside noted surprise chefs) will travel through Iceland treating guests to the finest Icelandic cuisine for 12 days starting on March 7th. If you are travelling in Iceland this month, be sure to check out InspiredbyIceland.com to see when Eldhús will be stopping near you… I am so sad I am missing this!
- During our travels we have heard so many great things about the food in Vietnam from other backpackers… In fact, most people who have traveled there will say it’s the best cuisine IN THE WORLD. Bold statement, but after reading Jack and Jill’s article on what to eat in Vietnam, I am not going to argue these claims! All I can say is that Tony and I are pretty pumped to visit Vietnam this summer (oh how badly we long for Pho!).
- When visiting Europe this spring and summer, we are looking to spend most of our time in Eastern Europe to save money. Although, after reading Adventurous Kate’s article on Portugal, I may have to change around some of our plans so we can visit this beautiful country.
- While in Portugal, Tony and I may have to sneak over to Pamplona, Spain to run with the bulls in July… Or maybe not!
- Being the chocolate addict that I am, I almost broke my computer with water damage from my drool as I read Adventurous Kate’s article on photos of chocolate around the world…. Talk about hardcore food porn!
- One of the biggest to-do items before our RTW trip was finding the proper medical insurance company to cover me and Tony overseas. It was a more difficult and lengthy process than we thought it would be, so I suggest doing your research on travel and medical insurance well in advance of your RTW departure date. Luckily, As We Travel has some great tips to follow on travel and medical insurance for vagabonds.
About Meg
Exhausted from traveling every week as a Business Management Consultant early in my career, I took a year off in 2012 to travel at my own pace. I am a high-energy girl that loves being active, eating food, drinking wine, and exploring the world with my partner-in-crime (and husband), Tony! I now reside in Portland, Oregon and continue to write about travel, food, wine, and the awesome adventures we have in the Pacific NW!
San Pedro was my favorite trip I went on while I was living in Chile! I hope you did some star-gazing!
I wish I could say yes but it was stormy and cloudy when we went so the star gazing wasn’t really happening
Meg, great recap and I love the pic of you and Tony. I also linked to Adventurious Kate and liked it. Portugal looks really lovely.
Thanks Jerry! Glad to see you are doing some Portugal research
